Did you know that on average every second molecule of oxygen we breathe in is produced by marine microalgae? They are also a viable source of renewable energy that does not occupy arable land areas and is characterized by high yields. For example, a bioreactor filled with chlorella vulgaris microalgae can absorb CO2 400 times more efficiently than any tree. Therefore, this large and diverse group of aquatic organisms belonging to the protist kingdom is becoming increasingly important for ensuring a more sustainable future.
